The Douglas Lycett Award was created to honor the late Douglas Lycett a founding member of the Ontario Daylily Society.  This award formally recognizes a daylily seedling hybridized by an ODS member that has shown itself to be of high quality in both plant and flower attributes.  This award is NOT a photography award but is to recognize excellent garden qualities both in the flower and plant habits.

This award for the best over all seedling is voted on each year by ODS members in good standing.   All submissions must have been grown in Canada by an ODS member residing within Canada.  Seedlings submitted must been grown in regular or amended garden soil and not in a greenhouse, nor in a pot.  This ensures that the seedling has been grown under as normal a conditions as possible in the garden. Entries which do not meet these requirements will not be accepted.

Each submission to the competition must include two pictures of the daylily, one showing a close up of the flower and the second clearly showing the plant branching and bud count with an open flower visible in the picture.  Two pictures are necessary so that both the flower and the plant performance can be evaluated.

For each submission please indicate the category the entry is entering and include key statistics such as flower diameter, scape height, bud count and number of branches. For spiders please indicate spider ratio and for unusual forms the UF category.  No markings identifying the parents of the seedling should be visible in the picture, nor should there be any markings that might identify the submitter.

ODS members can submit up to two entries to any of the following categories:

Miniature – flowers < 3” in diameter

Small – flowers > 3” but < 4 ½” in diameter

Large – flowers > 4.5” in diameter

Doubles

Spiders (specify spider ratio)

Unusual Form (specify form as crispate, cascade or spatulate)

There must be a minimum of three entries in a category for a vote to take place for a category award.  In the event that there are fewer than three entries in a category the submissions in that category will still remain as contenders for the Douglas Lycett Award.

A committee appointed by the ODS executive will prescreen all entries to ensure that the picture requirements have been adequately met.  The identity of the submitter will be kept confidential from the committee.  Should the committee decide that the picture requirements have not been adequately met the submitter will be informed by email of the decision and the reason(s) why.  The submitter will then have the opportunity to send another set of pictures of the seedling which fulfills the competition rules.

Attendees at the ODS Fall Meeting (September 20, 2008) will vote for their favourite seedling in each category and for their favourite overall seedling.  The submitter of the entry that garners the most votes in each category and the overall Douglas Lycett Award winner will be recognized and presented with their awards at the Can Am Classic held in the spring.  The award winning seedlings will be posted on the ODS website and printed in the ODS newsletter thereafter.

The deadline for electronic submissions to all categories for the Douglas Lycett Award categories is September 6, 2008.  No entries will be accepted after September 6, 2008.  Please send submissions to Mike Georges at ohbehave@sympatico.ca clearly indicating that the submissions are for the Douglas Lycett Award.

Below are a few example photos from the 2007 Lycett Award submissions (including the winner!) that showthe full plant with scapes so that the overall performance of the entry can be evaluated.
